Improving NHS services using the Map

By providing a framework and focus the Map makes the process of localising and improving NHS services far more time efficient.

A good example of how an NHS service can be improved using the Map is the treatment of cellulitis in Western Cheshire Primary Care Trust (PCT). Emergency admissions into hospitals in the Western Cheshire local heath community were approximately 30 patients a month. Now after working with the Map and their implementation team admissions have been reduced to 20 patients per month. This was achieved by a change in practice to first administer antibiotics in the community, and then communicate this change using the web based view of the Map staff use to keep up to date on clinical knowledge.

“In the previous way of working, patients with cellulitis were being admitted into secondary care and perhaps staying one or perhaps two days in an acute setting. And now, after introducing the Map and working with their implementation team, they're getting their care closer to home, in the community, and not having that stay in hospital". Jim Hughes, Director, Knowledge Management & Performance NHS Western Cheshire
